Also, I live in Michigan so I return the bottles and get the ten cents for each bottle. Do I have to pay taxes? I haven't even made $100 yet.
Ok, I have no job but I earn money from my parents doing chores and survey sites?
technically, yes - on the survey sites, at least. in theory, you're parents already paid taxes on whatever they give to you, and when you turn in cans, you're just getting that after-tax money back, so the IRS won't hold that against you.
the survey sites will probably report your wages, but you won't owe tax on it because it's so small.
however, if they do report it, you still have to file to prove you don't owe anything.
but really, though, i used to get small amounts of "taxable" income when i was a kid (interest from banks, etc.) but even though it was reported, i never bothered to file. it's not worth their time to target people who don't make enough to owe substantial taxes. just sending out the letter that tells you you're being audited would cost more than they would collect from you, so they won't bother.
BUT, if the survey sites withhold taxes from whatever you earn, then you should WANT to file your taxes, so you can get that money back!
